Depicting my interpretation of nature is derived from a need to express a universal theme. I often like to increase the size of what we know to be small aspects of the natural world’s complexities, from trees and plants to flowers and birds in vibrant color palettes. I aim to create a sense of wonder and immersive experience by highlighting the details of the natural world’s biodiversity. I chose wood as a medium to paint on because of its densely organic nature. I am drawn to the grain pattern and what it represents within the wood, which is essentially time. I prefer abstraction as a subject matter because it creates a tension between the organic and the man-made on the surface of the wood. My site-specific pieces often focus on bioregional flora and fauna, as well as the region’s history. My studio focuses greatly on the handmade and the artistic quality of the artisan. I want viewers to be intrigued by the detail and magic of the process.
I love waking up every morning and going to work in my studio. - JM
